Mercedes' A-Class E-Cell gets taken for a test drive

Mercedes-Benz's new A-Class E-Cell may be a limited production vehicle, but it is a production vehicle, which likely means that some folks will be interested in how it actually drives. Thankfully, the folks from PluginCars have now managed to take one for a quick spin, and have delivered a few first impressions. The short of it is that while it's a "nice ride," it's apparently not a very powerful one -- in fact, the site says that the car felt "significantly slower" than the Nissan Leaf, which also of course has the advantage of being cheaper and more widely available. The Mercedes does apparently handle much better, though, and while the floor is a bit higher than a normal car, the interior otherwise seems to be top notch. Unfortunately, the test drive wasn't exactly long enough to truly test the car's Tesla-provided batteries, but the site was at least pleased to see the current state of charge conveniently placed right in the middle of the dashboard.Mercedes' A-Class E-Cell gets taken for a test drive originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 19:41:00 EDT. Apogee rolls out Duet 2 pro audio interface for Macs

Recently drop $500 on an Apogee Duet audio interface for your Mac after pondering one for all these years? Then we're afraid we've got a bit of bad news for you, as the company has now finally rolled out a successor to the highly-desirable device. Apparently redesigned from the ground up, the new Duet 2 expectedly ditches FireWire in favor of USB, and packs some "completely redesigned" mic preamps and converters, along with two inputs and four outputs, a pair of configurable touch pads, and even an all new OLED display that replaces the basic LED meters on the original. Of course, the one thing that stays the same is the professional-level price -- look for this one to set you back $595 when it's available next month.

HP enables Google Cloud Print on ePrint printers right out of the box

Man, remember when transferring data to your printer required a big fat cable and physical proximity to your ink spitter? Thankfully, we live in more refined times now and HP and Google have hooked up to deliver the first printers with driverless Cloud Print support, making the whole thing that extra bit easier. HP ePrint printers were already sophisticated enough to receive instructions via email and now they're casting aside the need for a connected PC to talk to Google's Cloud Print service as well. All you need is your machine's @hpeprint.com email address and then you're away, zipping pictures and text from your smartphone, tablet or laptop to the HP paper decorator. It's all seamless and wireless and probably feels like the future when you're doing it. We'd tell you, but we stopped printing stuff in 2004.Continue reading HP enables Google Cloud Print on ePrint printers right out of the boxHP enables Google Cloud Print on ePrint printers right out of the box originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 13:25:00 EDT. All iOS 4.3.1 jailbreaks are still tethered, meaning you'll have to jailbreak your device after every reboot. An untethered jailbreak is slated for release sometime in the next week -- but 4.3 was meant to have an untether, too, and that never emerged.

Microsoft shuts down spam behemoth Rustock, reduces worldwide spam by 39%

Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit, working with federal law enforcement agents, has brought down the world's largest spam network, Rustock.

Rustock, at its peak, was a botnet of around 2 million spam-sending zombies capable of sending out 30 billion spam email per day. Microsoft's wholesale slaughter of Rustock could reduce worldwide spam output by up to 39%.

Rustock was taken down, piece by piece, in a similar way to the Mega-D botnet. First the master controllers, the machines that send out commands to enslaved zombies, were identified. Microsoft quickly seized some of these machines located in the U.S. for further analysis, and worked with police in the Netherlands to disable some of the command structure outside of the U.S.Continue reading Microsoft shuts down spam behemoth Rustock, reduces worldwide spam by 39%Microsoft shuts down spam behemoth Rustock, reduces worldwide spam by 39% originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 07:05:00 EST. SPB Shell 3D for Android: A very slick launcher that's just too expensive

Youtube link for mobile viewing It's been quite some time since we first saw what SPB Software was working on for Android, way back at Mobile World Congress in February 2010. But today, finally, we have SPB Shell 3D. It's a launcher replacement for Android, born from years of success on Windows Mobile, and we've been quite impressed with it in our several days of testing. At it's heart, SPB Shell 3D is like any other launcher. You have a number of preconfigured home screens and widgets, and you can tweak things to your liking. SPB has designed Shell 3D with a number of slick animations, including the weather widget and world clock. And you can spin your way from one home screen to another with ease. It's pretty slick, and we could easily use SPB Shell 3D as our launcher. Only real problem is the price. At $14.95, it's priced itself out of the consumer launcher market. There are just too many free and inexpensive options. On the other hand, SPB has made no secret that it's marketing its SPB UI Engine toward manufacturers, so don't be surprised if you see built in to upcoming phones. SPB Shell 3D is available for Android smartphones running Android 2.1 and up, so long as they have an OpenGL ES 2.0 compatible graphic controller. If you can part with the cash, we've got download links after the break.

Inside the giant megawatt batteries that will power Russia's Sochi Winter Olympic Games (video)

Clean and constant power is something that we take for granted here in the Americas. Sure, we've seen rolling blackouts in California before, and that outage in the Northeast back in 2003 was decidedly uncool, but those are the exception to the norm. Right now many Japanese citizens are dealing with power problems in the wake of the devastating tsunami, but in parts of Russia unreliable power is a decidedly reliable part of day-to-day life.

So, what's going to happen when a couple-hundred-thousand fans from around the world swoop into Sochi in 2014, along with a flotilla of international media and all the world's greatest athletes? The Winter Olympics will happen, and the power will flow. It has to, and it will thanks to that unassuming looking shipping container above. It's being assembled at Ener1's facility outside of Indianapolis, and it's actually a giant battery holding an amazing one megawatt-hour of power. That's enough to juice 1,000 average homes for an hour, or to act as the mother of all UPS's. Join us for a look inside and a video show how each of those packs is made.

CrossOver Games for Mac and Linux updated, fixes Rift, improves WoW and Star Trek Online

CrossOver Games, a commercial implementation of Windows emulator Wine, has been updated to version 10.1, bringing support for the new (and seemingly popular) Rift MMORPG to Linux and Mac PCs.

Beyond other bug and stability fixes, CrossOver 10.1 finally lets you install World of Warcraft with the Blizzard Downloader, and support for Star Trek Online's launcher has been improved a bit (but the game itself still doesn't perform fantastically).

CrossOver, if you've never heard of it before, is an emulation suite developed by CodeWeavers that lets you run many Windows programs on Mac and Linux computers. The list of supported programs is extensive, including Microsoft Office, and a ton of Windows games, such as Civilization, Fallout, EVE, Left 4 Dead, and so on.

There's a free trial available, but to get a full license of CrossOver Pro will cost you around $70 -- or $40, if you just want the CrossOver Games package. It's worth the money, though, if you don't want to play around with virtual machines and dual-booting.CrossOver Games for Mac and Linux updated, fixes Rift, improves WoW and Star Trek Online originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 09:00:00 EST. Google Image Search now lets you filter vector-only results

Google Image Search just got a bit fancier: You can now filter search results to only include SVG files.

SVG files, which stand for Scalable Vector Graphics, are files you can easily edit and change without loss of definition. If you've been following our Corel tutorials, they might have given you some ideas about the power of vector graphics.

Being able to use Google to find such files gives designers a great head-start: Need to use a cat in your artwork? Just find a vector one which looks about right, and modify it for your needs! Anything can be edited - the cat's pose, its proportion, colors, etc.

Searching for these files is very simple: Just tack filetype:svg on to the end of your search, like cat filetype:svg, or go to the sidebar and click Images > SVG files.

Being able to find SVGs so easily also poses a bit of a copyright issue however. Anyone posting SVG files publicly should certainly put in a bit more of an effort to make their terms of use very clear, and anyone using them should heed those terms. Play nice folks!Google Image Search now lets you filter vector-only results originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 04:30:00 EST. IE9 is the most energy-efficient modern browser, according to Microsoft's own testing

Of all the battlefields we've witnessed in the browser wars, this one's never really crossed our minds before: energy efficiency. Yes, the power efficiency of a piece of software, not hardware, is being touted by Microsoft as a differentiating feature for its fresh new Internet Explorer 9. It's thrown together the top five most popular browsers and put them through a cycle of benchmarks -- including Microsoft's own FishIE Tank graphics acceleration test, but not the somewhat popular Adobe Flash -- while measuring how much power they use beyond what the underlying Windows 7 system needs to keep itself going. Shockingly, IE9 was the winner each and every time and there's a tenuous conclusion drawn that if you want good battery life, you'll be going with Internet Explorer. Oh well, whether you consider them a good laugh or really valuable buyer's advice, there's plenty more of these power consumption comparisons at the source link below.IE9 is the most energy-efficient modern browser, according to Microsoft's own testing originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 19:38:00 EDT. Firefox 4 for Android launched, ready to Sync and speed up your browsing

It was a release candidate just about a week ago and today it's all ready to go. Firefox 4 for Android has just been released from the Mozilla labs and is now prowling the mobile internet. You can get yours at the Android Market, in no less than 10 languages, though there'll be no Flash playback. Still, tabbed browsing, extreme customizability, and bookmark / tab / history coordination between desktop and mobile (via Firefox Sync) are all nice to have, as is the promised threefold improvement in speed over the stock Android browser. Pretty nice list of improvements for some freebie software, wouldn't you say?Continue reading Firefox 4 for Android launched, ready to Sync and speed up your browsingFirefox 4 for Android launched, ready to Sync and speed up your browsing originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 11:25:00 EDT. Lenovo CEO: LePad's slimmer successor should arrive in September or October

Lenovo may have just launched the much delayed LePad in China, but it's already giddying us with a surprisingly early date for said Android tablet's successor. At last night's opening banquet for the 2011 Chinese IT Leadership Summit, CEO Yang Yuanqing revealed that the second-gen LePad will be slimmer (which is a given these days), and is expected to be launched in September or October -- merely three or four months after le original LePad's upcoming global launch in June. Shedding no light on specifications, Yang added that the next LePad was developed in parallel with its predecessor under a separate team, allowing it to come to fruition in just nine months. Very well, but actually making it to the market is an entirely different story, so we shall sit tight and watch -- hopefully Mr. Blurrycam will deliver the goods beforehand, too.Lenovo CEO: LePad's slimmer successor should arrive in September or October originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 08:33:00 EDT. Westone 4 earphones review

Westone isn't exactly a household name, even in the earphone universe. But what the company lacks in recognition, it more than makes up for in quality. If you'll recall, we had a listen to its ES5 custom in-ear monitors earlier in the year, and while they cost a staggering $950, they also managed to melt our brain and thoroughly spoil us in the process. Thankfully, there's a budget alternative: the Westone 4. Granted, even 50 percent off still lands you right around $449, but many audiophiles would argue that said price is a small one to pay when looking at a quad-driver setup, a three-way crossover network and an insanely robust set of earbud tips. There's no question that these guys are aimed at the professionals in the crowd, and if you're interested in seriously stepping up your mobile listening game, you owe it to yourself to peek our full review. It's after the break, per usual.

Get a data protection and recovery bundle for just $25, proceeds go to Japanese Red Cross

Bundlelytic, until March 25, is offering a data protection and recovery bundle for $25. The bundle contains Genie Timeline, Paragon Backup & Recovery, and EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard Professional. Individually the three packages would cost you $160.

If the great price wasn't sweet enough, 80% of all proceeds -- as in, 80% of your $25 -- will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society. In other words, you're paying $5 for software worth $160, and donating $20 to charity, to help the Japanese rebuild after the massive destruction caused by last week's earthquake and tsunami.

Almost as important, though, is that all three of the tools included in the bundle are top-notch. Paragon Backup & Recovery received top marks from Lee, and EASEUS Data Recovery is one of our go-to tools for scraping the last vestiges of data from dead drives. We haven't used Genie Timeline before, but it sounds pretty nifty -- it takes snapshots of your hard drive every 30 minutes and automatically backs up any changes. Both have also added social networking integration for fast sharing of URLs as you browse.

For users who have less powerful phones or want to conserve data, Opera Mini 6 offers a full mobile browsing experience with tremendous bandwidth savings thanks to Opera's compression kung fu. Mozilla details new Chrome-like release schedule and channels, Firefox 5 soon

Engineering Director of Mozilla, Rob Sayre, has detailed the upcoming changes to the Firefox release schedule. The most notable change is a shift away from feature-driven releases to a fixed six-week schedule-driven release pattern.

Instead of major releases every 12 to 18 months, Firefox will shift to a four-channel system, just like Google's Chrome browser. The nightly channel (mozilla-central) will remain in place, but the beta audience will be split into Experimental and Beta channels. The final channel will be a stable build (Firefox 4, Firefox 5, etc.)

Every six weeks, code will be shifted from one channel to the next. At week 6, code will move from mozilla-central to firefox-experimental; firefox-experimental will move to firefox-beta; and firefox-beta will move to Firefox, the stable channel. Around week 12 and 18 the same process will occur, and so on, until the end of time. This means that we could see a major Firefox release every six weeks, once the machine starts turning.Continue reading Mozilla details new Chrome-like release schedule and channels, Firefox 5 soonMozilla details new Chrome-like release schedule and channels, Firefox 5 soon originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 17 Mar 2011 08:30:00 EST. Let it Slide is an engaging, difficult puzzle game

I have a thing for physics games, and I've been known to post the occasional platformer or action game here and there. But Let it Slide is one of the brainiest games I've posted to date.

The idea is very simple, and far from original: You get a board with pieces arranged in a particular pattern; you have to slide those around until you get the special piece into its target location.

It's not even about finding out where the target location is - you can just hover over "dim tiles" and instantly see where you're supposed to bring the special piece. But getting it there is a whole different story.

There are five tutorial levels, which I strongly recommend you do. Then there are twenty "beginner" levels, but that's really a misnomer. If those are the beginner levels, I don't want to know what the intermediate and advanced levels look like!

Every time you finish a level you get a score based on how many clicks it took you - each level has a "par" (the minimum number of clicks it could be completed in), and your performance is compared to that gold standard. Because it's such a brainy game, getting it right is quite satisfying. I was downright proud of myself when I managed to finish a few levels. All in all, quite recommended, especially if you've got a few minutes of quiet. It might actually help you focus better later on.Let it Slide is an engaging, difficult puzzle game originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 17:00:00 EST. This beauty is engineered to reduce unwanted vibration and preserve bass caliber while outputting 100W of sound. Featuring a double diaphragm packaged close together, the Sound Wing gives off omnidirectional sound -- that's 360 degrees of noise. And thanks to HVT, the coils within the speaker have been rearranged to reduce the wasted space in traditional speakers -- though for some reason this particular unit still measures a portly 109mm thick. Seeing that the tech Pioneer has implemented here is novel, we're interested to see how this thing will sound in the real world. You'll find the Sound Wing in Japan for ¥41,000 (about $507) come June.Pioneer debuts new Sound Wing HVT speakers, novel tech touted within originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 15:50:00 EDT. Much Ado About Android Licensing and Headers

Those of us who have spent more than, say, five minutes in the Linux blogosphere know that there's pretty much never a dull moment around here. In case any further proof was needed, however, the past week or so has surely afforded it, courtesy of the never-ending quagmire of legal licensing. "Does Android have a copyright problem?" was the question that got posed on Slashdot last week.

BitDefender Traffic Light protects your Web browser from malware and phishing

We've seen several browser toolbar security tools before here at Download Squad. Nearly every big-name antivirus company offers one nowadays, but BitDefender Traffic Light has one key advantage: it's available on all five major browsers! Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, and Safari.

It's also not nearly as in-your-face as some browser malware defense tools. Traffic Light displays only a small slide-out grab tab that you can click to display its analysis of the current page. When malicious activity is detected, however, Traffic Light will spring into action and prevent the offending code from executing. You'll be giving up a bit of memory -- somewhere between 20 and 30 megs -- but most of us can spare at least that much, especially for some additional Web security.

To install Traffic Light in your browser, visit the BitDefender site. A few clicks later an you'll have unobtrusive malware protection hiding just below your browser's toolbar.BitDefender Traffic Light protects your Web browser from malware and phishing originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 14:30:00 EST. Opera Mobile 11 and Mini 6 released: faster, tablet interfaces, and lots more

Better mobile browsing seems to be the special of the day, with the Firefox for Mobile RC landing alongside the Opera Mobile 11 and Opera Mini 6 releases. Both Mobile and Mini have had their user interfaces touched up, modernized, and enhanced for use on tablet devices. Both have also added social networking integration for fast sharing of URLs as you browse.

Opera Mobile 11 now has a faster Presto rendering engine and improved JavaScript performance, expanded HTML5 support (including the audio and video tags), and the ability to display Adobe Flash content on Android. Haptic response, smoother panning and zooming, session restore, and Web Open Font Format support have also been added.

For users who have less powerful phones or want to conserve data, Opera Mini 6 offers a full mobile browsing experience with tremendous bandwidth savings thanks to Opera's compression kung fu. Pinch-to-zoom support has been added, and Opera Mini can now pass YouTube video links to your device's built-in player. There are also better navigation controls.

Download Opera Mobile 11 or Opera Mini 6 for your phone or tablet.

Android users can also find Opera Mobile in the Market. iOS users, fear not: Opera promises an update for your Apple device is coming soon, too!

HSN details Nook Color update for 'mid-April': Android 2.2, Flash, apps and push email

Spent some quality time watching the Home Shopping Network this morning to hear just how the Nook Color will be improved? That's what we thought... but we bit the bullet and tuned in ourselves to get the details for you. Simply put, HSN says Barnes and Noble will start rolling out an over-the-air software package in "mid-April" that will update the Nook Color to Android 2.2, bringing Adobe Flash Player, Angry Birds, and push email of some sort. It'll also apparently include "lots of Nook apps," though the channel's pitchmen only had one to show on TV -- a kid-friendly sketchpad, with a variety of drawing utensils and colored paper. HSN hosts also claim that customers who purchase the Nook Color on the show are "guaranteed to be the very first people updated," though we're not sure we'll take them at their word, considering some of the other fabulous exaggerations we just heard on the air.

Adobe Flash 10.2 for Android available today, improves performance, adds hardware acceleration for Honeycomb

Adobe Flash Player 10.2 will land in the Android Market today, bringing with it modest performance improvements for Android 2.2 and 2.3, and hardware acceleration for 3.0. Flash 10.2 is also the first version of Flash to work on the Motorola Xoom tablet.

Engadget says that they "saw a slight but noticeable boost in framerate when playing a YouTube trailer at 480p" on their Droid 2, and that the same videos were "perfectly smooth" on their Motorola Xoom tablet. Engadget were playing with a beta version of Flash 10.2, however, so performance might be further improved by the time it hits the Market later today.

Other than some further performance and usability improvements for Android 3.0, there doesn't seem to be much else of note in Flash 10.2.Adobe Flash 10.2 for Android available today, improves performance, adds hardware acceleration for Honeycomb originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 12:15:00 EST. Is your iPad 2 experiencing intermittent WiFi connection issues?

Some things, they never change. Boys will be boys, free never really is, and iPads will have WiFi issues. If you'll recall, the original Apple slate also had such troubling issues with maintaining a wireless connection that the folks in Cupertino actually made a promise to fix things in time. Eventually, that patch was indeed rolled out, but then we heard that iOS 4.2 was being pushed a bit due to -- you guessed it -- more WiFi issues. Now that the iPad 2 has made its way out into the adoring public's hands, we're starting to see a growing cadre of customers raising similar gripes. Our in-house iPad 2 hasn't shown any WiFi connection issues as of yet, but there's a 10+ page thread over in Apple's forums that have us wondering if we're amongst the lucky few. Have you noticed any internet quirks with your new iPad? Or are all of these people simply using the world's worst router? Let us know in comments below.

Google Music being tested internally, beta soon?

One day soon, we may actually get to spend some hands-on time with the oft-delayed Google Music service.

According to CNET, Google is currently testing the service internally. Unfortunately for the rest of us, until Google works out all the licensing details with the major record labels, there's not really any chance of us being able to set up our own cloud-based music lockers on Google servers.

We know that's what the aim is -- thanks to the sync functionality in the leaked Android Music app -- but without label consent Google Music still has the whiff of vaporware.

It sure would be nice to see things finalized so that we can start synchronizing our iTunes libraries with Google Music in the cloud, though...Google Music being tested internally, beta soon? originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 08:30:00 EST. In BattlePaint, you play a cube. In fact, you're not even a cube -- just a square. But boy, are you fast! And you can shoot in all directions. That's important, because there are baddies coming in from all over the place.

The "baddies" are swarms of other squares, in all sorts of pretty colors. They track you all over the screen, and you run around very quickly and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. If that doesn't sound very emotionally deep, it's because it isn't. But it's fun!

After you shoot a baddy, it splashes paint as it disappears. You need to skate across this blob of paint and "eat it up" to get points. This game is fast. It clocked in at around 60-70 FPS on my system, and was loads of fun to play. GNU Project begins work on totally free Skype alternative

The GNU Project has begun laying the groundwork for another piece of "Free as in Freedom" software. This time, the group has its sights set on developing a Skype alternative which rivals the original in ease of use and functionality.

Dubbed GNU Free Call, the program will rely on a "self-aware, meshed calling network" to deliver secure, anonymous VoIP. The GNU SIP Witch server will provide the back end, which will be extended to communicate with peers and cache routing information.

The aim is to deliver a cross-platform experience, so smartphone clients are in the work as well -- and with this being a GNU project, the open-source Android is a likely target. Other platforms which don't play as well with FSF and GNU licensing probably won't get in on the action.GNU Project begins work on totally free Skype alternative originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 08:00:00 EST. HTC Incredible S has signed bootloader and recovery image

Bad news for anyone hoping to run custom ROMs on HTC's new Incredible S anytime soon. A recently-discovered RUU for the device seems to indicate that like its distant cousin the Thunderbolt 4G, the Incredible S has a signed bootloader and recovery image. This means any custom recovery image without a valid HTC signature (the kind you'd need to load a custom ROM on your device) would be detected by the phone, which would then deny you access to it.This is a potentially major setback for any Incredible S owners hoping to ditch the stock ROM in favor of something a little more exotic, as it adds an extra hurdle to the usual rooting/flashing process. All is not lost, though, as recent progress in hacking the Thunderbolt may prove useful in eventually cracking the Incredible S's security. Google Chrome logo updated, now flatter, cuter and more balanced (pictures)

Just a week after its open-source brother Chromium had its logo summarily flattened, Chrome has followed suit. For now it's only available in the Developer channel, but presumably it will quickly percolate down to the Beta and Stable channels. There are some more images of the new logo after the break.

It was originally speculated that the Chromium logo change was to differentiate it from Chrome, but now it looks like Google might just have grown tired of the unbalanced, 3D-effect Chrome orb. The new geometric design is definitely easier on the eye, and it will be a lot more flexible too. Its icon has been updated as well, and it looks great on the Windows 7 taskbar.

We expect there'll be a statement from Google about the new logo later today, and we'll update this post when we find out more.

Hacker nets two years in jail after pilfering 7 million in virtual poker chips

Crime, it just doesn't pay. Well, actually it does, to the tune of £53,612, but then you get caught and you have to work off that salary with two years at Her Majesty's pleasure. One Ashley Mitchell, an enterprising 29-year old from Devon, England, managed to break into Farmville maker Zynga's mainframe, hijack the identities of two of its staffers, and procure for himself a cool £7 million ($11.4m) in virtual poker chips. He then proceeded to sell about a third of them for the above sum, while consuming a big chunk of the rest in satisfying his own gambling habit. Ashley already had a history of digital malfeasance, having previously hacked into the systems of Torbay Council, his former employer, and is now on the receiving end of a two-year prison term for his current crime plus the activation of a 30-week suspended sentence. There's a warning in this tale of woe for us all, however -- Monsieur Mitchell piggybacked on his neighbors' unsecured WiFi networks in order to do his dastardly deeds. Firefox 4 manages 7 million downloads in first 24 hours, still going strong

In its first 24 hours of public availability, Firefox 4 was downloaded around 7 million times, beating out 3.5's tally of 5 million, but falling short of Firefox 3's monumental 8 million.

Mozilla's new browser has maintained more than 4000 downloads per minute for the last 24 hours, peaking at around 9000 per minute in the late afternoon yesterday, when all of Europe and the Americas were awake. There was also a surge over night as Asia woke up, with huge download spikes caused by Japan and India. China, despite having the largest population of Internet surfers, has seen relatively slow uptake, and is currently third in Asia, some way behind India.

The United States registered the largest number of downloads in 24 hours, with about 1.5 million. Germany was second with around 600,000, which, considering Germany's population of 82 million, also represents the most Firefox downloads per capita. The U.K. has seen fairly poor adoption of the browser, registering just 235,000 downloads in the first 24 hours.Continue reading Firefox 4 manages 7 million downloads in first 24 hours, still going strongFirefox 4 manages 7 million downloads in first 24 hours, still going strong originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 11:45:00 EST. Amazingly, MySpace?s Decline Is Accelerating

Between January and February 2011, says Comscore, worldwide unique visitors to MySpace declined by a staggering 14.4% from 73 million visitors to 63 million visitors. It's about half of the audience they had a year ago.

Everyone knows MySpace traffic is going the wrong way, but the accelerating decline (and big financial losses) is a serious problem. Parent company News Corp. is in the middle of a sale process, and everyone from venture firms to private equity firms to operating companies are taking a look. "It's like slowing down at the scene of an accident," says one person with knowledge of the discussions, "everyone wants to take a look at how bad things have become."

The problem with negative growth is that predictive modeling has to be thrown out the window. And an accelerating decline in audience suggests that MySpace won't be stabilizing soon. Right now, people are fleeing as fast as they can from the site.

According to a report by a Japanese news agency, a radiation monitoring robot, aptly named Monirobo, is the first non-human responder to go on-site following the partial meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The machine, which was developed by Japan's Nuclear Safety Technology Centre to operate at lethal radiation levels, reportedly began work Friday, enlisting a 3D camera, radiation detector, and heat and humidity sensors to monitor the extent of the damage. A second Monirobo, used to collect samples and detect flammable gases, is expected to join its red counterpart soon -- both robots are operated by remote control from distances up to one kilometer away. Google scores a patent for its 'Doodles'

Google's Doodles have certainly come a long way from their humble beginnings, but the company has now pulled off what may be its most jaw-dropping feat yet -- it's just been awarded a patent for them. Described as "systems and methods for enticing users to access a web site," the patent credits Google co-founder Sergey Brin as the sole inventor, and it comes more than ten years after Google first filed the application. As you might expect, the patent seems to cover some fairly broad territory, although it's not clear how or if Google actually plans to enforce it -- either way, we can only assume that some other companies who enjoy having a bit fun with their logo from time to time might have something to say about it.Google scores a patent for its 'Doodles' originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 18:20:00 EDT. Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

Yes, that's right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren't always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight - the have arcing trajectories, so you don't always hit exactly where you aim.

There's another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Introducing Your Honey to Linux

Linux geeks are a generous sort, it seems fair to say, always eager to share the joys of their favorite operating system. So when a Linux geek enters a new relationship -- with a fellow human, that is -- it's only natural to encourage that new flame to adopt Linux too. Makes perfect sense, right? Of course it does. Unfortunately, said partners don't always see it that way.

BattlePaint is an addictive geometric shooter game

It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don't be offended -- I don't think it's personal.BattlePaint is an addictive geometric shooter game originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 09 Mar 2011 17:00:00 EST. Balance is a challenging mouse-based physics game

Years of computer use have taught us that the mouse cursor is "above" the windows. It doesn't push anything around; at least not without you clicking anything.

Balance takes that ingrained bit of knowledge and cancels it out. Suddenly your cursor (a blue dot) is solid - and if it touches the blue block, it pushes it around.

Your job is to use your cursor to nudge the blue block over to the orange block. You will have to push it, lift it and even flip it on its side, and then balance it. It's a very tricky game - one I wouldn't recommend tackling with a laptop trackpad.

Still, if you have a mouse and a hankering for a little physics gameplay, this is a cute little game. I like how the blue block never stops smiling, it makes me feel better about the world.Balance is a challenging mouse-based physics game originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 10 Mar 2011 18:30:00 EST. Googlers Buy More Junk Food Than Microsofties (And Why Rapleaf Is Creepy)

If you weren't creeped out by data-mining startup Rapleaf after reading about their ways in a relatively unsettling Wall Street Journal article published last October ("The San Francisco startup says it has 1 billion e-mail addresses in its database"), chances are you will be now.

For its latest 'study', Rapleaf has tapped its database of identifiable information to extract a sample of 6,000 Google employees (email addresses ending in @google.com) and 16,000 Microsoft employees (email addresses ending in @microsoft.com) and subsequently analyzed their grocery purchase behavior in partnership with an unnamed loyalty cards aggregator.

Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps

Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It's free and bare-bones -- all it does is track what applications you're using and for how long.

A big drawback at this point is that it doesn't integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn't require constant Web app use, knowing how long you've used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time.

This is far from the only application in this space -- alternatives such as Slife and Chrometa are full-featured and impressive -- but PAM is good option for those who want a nice, simple tracker.Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 05 Mar 2011 10:00:00 EST. Google Nexus S 4G with WiMAX announced for Sprint: coming this spring for $200

For a while, it seemed like the 850 / 1900MHz 3G version of the Nexus S that'd work on AT&T, Bell, Telus, and Rogers would be the next one to show up, but Sprint ended up emerging as the frontrunner more recently -- and now it's official. The Nexus S 4G stays true to the T-Mobile-flavored original, offering an unfettered stock Gingerbread experience; it's fractions of a millimeter thicker and a couple grams heavier, but the real change is inside where you'll find both CDMA / EV-DO and WiMAX radios -- hence the "4G" in the name. There'll be a menu option for turning WiMAX on and off -- good for those times when you value battery life over breakneck browsing speeds -- and considering Sammy's prior experience rolling the Epic 4G for Sprint, we're cautiously optimistic that the Nexus S hardware will make the transition from GSM with minimum pain. The new version will be available "this spring" for $199.99; follow the break for Samsung's full press release.Continue reading Google Nexus S 4G with WiMAX announced for Sprint: coming this spring for $200Google Nexus S 4G with WiMAX announced for Sprint: coming this spring for $200 originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 08:01:00 EDT. Dodge is a space-shooter in which you have no weapons

Space-shooters are usually a fairly fiery affair, with many types of guns, weapon upgrades, power-ups and more. Dodge does away with all of that, while keeping the very essence of a space shooter: Dark background, fast action, and stuff blowing up all over the place.

Your vector-looking spacecraft is the fastest thing on the screen, most of the time. And as the header implies, you have absolutely no weapons; you can't get any, either. All you have is agility and maneuverability.

Your opponents shoot heat-seeking missiles at you; the missiles lock on and start tracking you. The trick is to dodge the missiles while putting them in the path of one of your enemies, thus letting them have a taste of their own medicine.

There are three types of enemies, at least in the first few levels: "simple" spaceships which fire slow projectiles, "tanks" which seem to be more serious and take more hits to destroy, and "circles." The circles simply explode, spewing twenty or thirty very fast projectiles. This sounds dangerous, but is actually great once you learn to use them; they are very destructive for tanks, and can even blow up other circles.

The soundtrack is very techno, but it meshes very well with this type of game. Intense fun!Dodge is a space-shooter in which you have no weapons originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 01 Mar 2011 17:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Permalink | Email this | Comments

AVG AirSpace cloud sync and backup for Windows enters beta

We told you AVG was getting into the cloud sync and storage game, and now you can take the company's beta app for a test drive. You'll need to fill out a brief survey and a registration form, but then AVG will fork over 5GB of cloud storage into which you can sync anything you choose from your Windows systems.

Once the service exits beta, you'll be able to pay for additional storage. It's also worth knowing that AVG AirSpace (or LiveKive, whichever name the company settles on) functions both as a sync and a backup utility. You can even back up multiple machines' data into the same storage account.

AirSpace also offers a way for you to share uploaded files with your friends and colleagues, just like Dropbox. Unfortunately, at least for the time being, there's only a Windows AirSpace installer -- Mac and Linux aren't supported, and no mobile apps are available either.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: shifting towers, hydrogen beads, and the shockwave engine for fuel efficiency

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

It was a big week for alternative energy as Inhabitat showcased a range of green fuel innovations that cut costs while bringing clean energy to the forefront. We looked at hydrogen 'Micro Beads' that could fuel cars for $1.50 per gallon, and we saw Michigan State University unveil a new shock wave engine that could triple fuel the efficiency of hybrid vehicles. XL Hybrids also got in on the action by releasing an add-on kit that can transform any gas-guzzler into a hybrid, and Google made waves by announcing their investment in biofuels startup CoolPlanetBiofuels and adding EV charging stations to Google Maps. Finally, to round out or green automotive news this week we also have to give a special shout out to Artega, who introduced their hot new SE Electric Sports Car - we can already hear the honks and catcalls!

Off the road and out into the ocean, we showcased a design for underwater kite turbines that harvest energy from ocean waves, and we were wowed by Kinetura's shape-shifting Kinetower. In other architecture news, construction finally commenced on MVRDV's massive Amanora Vertical City Apartments in Pune, India -- a mixed use development totaling over 4.3 million square feet.

We also saw several new developments on the solar power front - scientists in the United Kingdom are working on a solar-powered kit that could lighten the load of soldiers-and, more important, increase their mobility-by up to 50 percent. That seems like the perfect complement to OS' amazing GSR 110B - a retractable solar power system that delivers 40 watts on the spot with a combined solar and battery backup. Lightweight and easy to pack, the solar unit is easily deployed in emergency situations as long as the weather permits.Inhabitat's Week in Green: shifting towers, hydrogen beads, and the shockwave engine for fuel efficiency originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 20 Mar 2011 20:30:00 EDT. HTC Incredible S review

The Incredible S is a beguiling little beast. Looking at its name, familiar rump, and mostly run of the Android mill specs, you'd think it little more than an incremental update. And yet, pick it up and play with it for even the briefest of instances and you'll realize that it's somehow a lot more than that. Seemingly slight changes to the screen, in moving from 3.7 to 4 inches and from an imperfect AMOLED panel to a crisp and clear Super LCD, have earned our eyes' approbation, while an upgraded Snapdragon under the hood, equipped with Adreno 205 graphics, infuses it with a fresh breath of firepower for those demanding HD videos and increasingly sophisticated Android games. Notably, the chip combo inside the Incredible S is the same as that contained within Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play, foretelling perhaps of a PlayStation Certified future for this handset. But that's the future -- right now, there's a big juicy review for you to dig into, so skip past the break to get started.
